Tick FAQ's

Updated: Aug 26, 2020

When should I worry about ticks?

Many people do not know that ticks are active whenever the air-temperature is above freezing. Ticks do not die in the winter months, they lay dormant in material such as leaf litter. As the air-temperature increases in the Spring, tick activity also increases. Nymph tick activity is most active in June and July. Hence, most people report having Lyme’s disease in the summer months.

How do ticks get onto my property?

Ticks are able to travel long distances by attaching themselves to a host. Ticks are parasites that are known to attach themselves to squirrels, birds, groundhogs, mice, deer, dogs, and humans. We recommend that property owners keep any materials that would attract wildlife far from the house or child play areas. Examples include, bird feeders, firewood, garbage cans ect. Ticks prefer dark moist areas and it is encouraged to keep such areas far from your home.

How do I know if there are ticks in my backyard?

Ticks are most commonly found in high grass or thick bushy areas. The best way to prevent tick infestations is to monitor your backyard closely throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall. Before returning inside from your backyard, check yourself, kids, and pets over for ticks. Areas to check specifically include the armpit and groin areas. Always check your body over while showering. It is also encouraged to wash your clothes and dry them for at least 20 minutes with heat.

How can I create a tick free environment inside of my home and outside of my home?

First off, a tick infestation can begin with only one tick. Ticks lay thousands of eggs. Ticks can make it inside of your home through pets, children, and adults. The best way to prevent ticks inside of your home is to constantly vacuum and check your pets, children, and yourself for ticks. With regard to the outside of your home, deterring ticks begins with proper maintenance of your property. Always properly maintain the length of your grass and shrubs around your home. In Autumn, rake leaves frequently as ticks borrow into leaf litter in the Fall seasons.  Do not leave trash lying around your property. Also, Place playground equipment where the sun can hit the equipment for many hours per day. Avoid dark moist areas as ticks are drawn to these specific conditions.

What to do in case of an infestation.

If you find numerous ticks in or around your home you most likely have an infestation. The best thing to do in this case is to immediately call a pest control specialist and share what’s going. Answer the questions of “When did you notice the first tick?”, “How many ticks have you seen inside and outside of your home?”, “Do you have any pets?”, and “Do you have any children?”. Since ticks carry diseases, It is strongly recommended to call a pest professional before the problem becomes severe. Since Staten Islands deer population is booming, Deer Tick numbers are on the rise. Superior Pest is here to save your summer!
